I am sure most of you have heard of intellectual property, but what exactly is it? We all know that property is some sort of possession, whether it be land, goods, or in this case, an intangible creation of a persons' intellect. Intellectual property law encourages a variety of intellectual creations and allows creators to benefit from their hard work and investments. These creators then become the owners of patents, trademarks, and copyrighted works.
One could successfully argue that intellectual property helps to make society what it is today! It encourages economic growth, assists in the creation of new jobs and industries, and promotes innovation. Imagine if computers, cell phones, or cars had not been invented. The advancement of technology has greatly contributed to the success of major companies and has made our everyday lives a whole lot easier! Imagine having to mail letters to family members instead of sending them a text message or simply giving them a call.
We must thank Martin Cooper for making the first publicized handheld mobile phone call on a prototype DynaTAC model back in 1973. DynaTAC was the first commercially available portable handheld cell phone. We must also thank Karl Benz for inventing the modern car which has advanced over time due to modern technology. These inventions, however, only address one form of intellectual property, patents.
Copyright protection is available to authors of "original works of authorship" that are fixed in a tangible form of expression. Examples of copyrightable works include photos, lyrics, paintings, play scripts, and artwork. Trademarks protect brand names and logos used on goods and services. I am sure you all have heard of some of the most famous and widely recognized trademarks Google, Walmart, Kodak, and Apple.
So now that you have a better understanding of intellectual property and its many forms, you will begin to view the world from a different perspective. Share this information with those in your circle and look out for the next blog for more content on intellectual property!
